About the Show
Aaron Burleson
My work uses figuration to reflect on the mythos of contemporary life, both personal and collective. Acrylic paint lends itself to quick production of compositions that echo the rapid shifts in today’s culture – each artwork can be at once familiar, humorous and discomforting. One moment could be a wildlife encounter first sourced on Twitter and the next could be a vision of mythological figures in a color field setting. Americana, sexuality, and spirituality emerge as ongoing points of investigation, with each artwork set within one world fluctuating between the mundane and the legendary. This tonal uncertainty allows space for the viewer to reflect on their own relationship with the imagery.

The title of the body of work in this exhibition is Cautionary Tale. In this exhibition of all new work that I am showing for the first time, my sculptures continue to act as intimate self-portraits and reflections on my own psyche. Previously having worked a lot with Artificial Intelligence as a departure point in the process of creating the work I showed in my MFA thesis exhibition; I have become increasingly interested in the emotional experiences that make us human. Therefore, I find myself wanting to capture human qualities that supposedly artificial intelligence cannot emulate. I am diagnosed with Bi-Polar disorder. Thanks to science, I now navigate life normally. As I study my own emotions, I find I am most interested in past experiences I have had during manic episodes. Fueled by delusions, my mind often becomes entangled with the idea I am living within a mash-up of fairy tales. In these past mental states, I went on actual journeys, and while I did, I experienced a wide array of feelings and moods. During these episodes, I navigated the delusional experience of these fairy tales until I often ended up in a regrettable situation. That is why I consider the re-telling of these past experiences to be cautionary tales. I am introspective and focused, studying my own emotions like a passionate scientist. I become my own research. I am open about my past struggle with mental health to bring awareness to the surrounding issues, including disability justice. I tell my stories or tales in an effort to fight stigma.
