The current installation at MDK Law features Kirsta Niemie Benedetti, a Social Impact artist based in Columbus, Ohio. Through portraiture, storytelling, and installation art, her work explores themes of identity, visibility, and human connection. She is the founder of Whole Picture Project and creator of Life Is Precious, a collaborative portraiture and storytelling initiative developed with incarcerated women at an Ohio women’s prison.

Artist Statement

My work explores how portraiture can restore visibility, challenge assumptions, and invite us to encounter one another more fully. Whether I am painting a stranger who wandered into my studio during a Franklinton Friday gallery hop or collaborating with a woman serving a prison sentence, I am interested in the same question: What happens when we can truly see another person?

Historically, portraiture has been reserved for those with power, status, and influence. I am drawn to reclaiming that tradition and redirecting its attention toward everyday people whose lives are no less significant. Through painting, I seek to elevate the ordinary, revealing the dignity, complexity, and individuality that exist within every person. 

My process is deeply relational. Portraits often begin with conversation, storytelling, and shared curiosity. Rather than imposing a narrative, I approach each painting as a collaboration—an opportunity to honor how someone sees themselves and how they wish to be seen by others. In some works, this takes the form of traditional portraiture. In others, I incorporate symbolic objects, text, or sculptural elements that reflect personal histories, values, and identities.

At the heart of my practice is a belief that visibility has the power to transform. A portrait is never simply a likeness; it is an invitation into a relationship. Through these encounters, I hope to create moments of recognition that bridge differences, foster empathy, and remind us of our shared humanity.

My work ultimately seeks to make visible what is often overlooked: that every life contains a story worth knowing and a person worthy of being seen.

Kirsta Niemie Benedetti is a Social Impact artist based in Columbus, Ohio. Through portraiture, storytelling, and installation art, her work explores themes of identity, visibility, and human connection. She is the founder of Whole Picture Project and creator of Life Is Precious, a collaborative portraiture and storytelling initiative developed with incarcerated women at an Ohio women’s prison. Drawing on a background in community engagement and nonprofit leadership, Benedetti creates work that challenges assumptions, fosters empathy, and invites viewers to encounter the complexity and dignity of others. Her work has been exhibited throughout Ohio and New York and centers the belief that every life is worthy of being seen.
