Hiroo Onoda was a Japanese Imperial Army intelligence officer who became famous for continuing to fight in the Philippines nearly 30 years after World War II had ended. Born on March 19, 1922, Onoda was deployed to the island of Lubang in December 1944 with a mission to conduct guerrilla warfare and resist enemy forces for as long as possible. When Japan surrendered in 1945, Onoda and a few of his comrades refused to believe the war was over. Despite numerous attempts to inform themthrough leaflets dropped from planes, loudspeaker messages, and even personal letters and photographs from their familiesthey dismissed these as enemy propaganda.
