About the Show
Brandon Doup
My work asks the question, “Why do certain moments stay with us?” Our memories of these moments have been abstracted over time due to perspective and life experience. I explore how these memories have shaped who I have become, and how it’s informed my decisions raising a family. The house shape is common in my work, reflecting my feelings on the constant moving I did as a child, and using this template to explore the feelings of this memory deeper, to fill the interior of these homes. I often title my paintings with dates or descriptions relating to a specific memory because I want the viewer to think about where they were at that point in time. Printmaking has strongly influenced my painting style of structured, clear, intentionally planned compositions. I gather from my experience working as a non-traditional artist, while researching Pop Art, Impressionism, Dada, Iconography, Egyptian and Aztec Art to influence my artistic approach.
About the Artist:
Brandon graduated from Ashland University in 2007 with a Bachelors in Fine Arts, with a focus on printmaking and sculpture. During his studies, he also worked as a photographer in a local studio. While working as a photographer, Brandon not only learned how to compose an image, but how to communicate energy and emotion through a still image. Brandon has also worked as an art director in a service program for adults with developmental disabilities. Through his time working with these artists, he learned to find joy in the simple act of mark making. This experience changed the way he thought about art. Since 2015, his focus has been on abstract paintings. Brandon has exhibited in galleries throughout Columbus, Akron, and Mansfield, including the Columbus Museum of Art for their ‘Art for Life’ event in 2023, and as a muralist at the Franklinton Scrawl Fest for 5 out of the last 6 years.
