About the Work
Haptic Hearts Group Statement:
Everything we know, the senses have told us. The people we meet and the spaces we occupy exist uniquely within our memory in the way that we have created them. Moments in time are extracted and filed away into the depths of our very being. They sit and wait to be recalled by that feeling of familiarity. That smell you have smelled before, that feeling on your fingertips, that light in your eyes. It happens quickly. In a split second you are there again, that old place, in front of that old face. So vividly, it comes and then it’s gone again, living on in the vastness of your mind. These are the moments that create the mosaics of our individual and collective inner lives.
Through this body of work, I am exploring grief, space, memory and the interplay between them. I am
using an abstract language to paint the interior of my late grandfathers wood shop. He taught and
gave me the tools to create. Time starts to feel arbitrary in spaces that hold shifting memories.
Tactile Series No. 1
When we interact with artwork in traditional settings like galleries and museums often the general rule is “look don’t touch.” To challenge this notion, I set out to create a series that stimulates our tactile senses and investigates the neurological processes which allow us to perceive different textures. I often say my intention as an artist is to create unique sensory experiences that anyone and everyone can enjoy regardless of where they came from, where they’re at, or where they’re going. By extending my interests beyond the visual realm I am hoping to create a more inclusive art space for people who are blind or visually impaired. I am so excited to be including a piece in this show which is a collaboration between myself and students from Richard Ratvasky’s art class at the Ohio State School for the Blind.
Krista Faist is a virtual reality artist based in Columbus, Ohio. She holds a BFA from Penn State in New Media, and an MFA from CCAD. Her background is in oil painting, computer science, and nonprofit development. She also creates intricate, colorful sculptures and encaustic paintings on plate glass. Her work explores childhood wonderment, sentimentality and liminal states of reality.
New Media artist Krista Faist and published author Timmy Reed are performing an interactive looping projection video, accompanying a reading of long form prose entitled “Birds and Other Things We Placed in Our Hearts”. As viewers walk up to the projection, a skeletal tracker animates flashes of semi-abstracted objects representing nostalgia and sentimentality, which will appear to emanate from and transform with the viewer.
